IUI Treatment

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment in which prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.

IUI may be considered for selected individuals or couples following fertility assessment.

What it is

What Is IUI?

IUI involves preparing a sperm sample and placing the processed sperm into the uterus using a thin catheter.

The procedure is timed around ovulation to increase the opportunity for sperm to meet an egg.

Your specialist reviews your fertility history and recommends appropriate investigations.

Ovulation monitoring

The timing of treatment is coordinated with ovulation.

Sperm preparation

The sperm sample is processed in preparation for insemination.

Insemination

The prepared sperm is placed into the uterus using a thin catheter.

Follow-up

Your fertility team advises you about follow-up and pregnancy testing.

Who it suits

  • Unexplained infertility with open fallopian tubes
  • Mild male-factor results on semen analysis
  • Difficulty with intercourse or ejaculation
  • Ovulation problems such as PCOS, once controlled
  • Couples using donor sperm
At least one open fallopian tube and a reasonable sperm count are needed. If your tubes are blocked, IVF is the appropriate route.
Step by step

Your IUI cycle, day by day

1
Days 2 to 5

Baseline scan and plan

A scan early in your period confirms the ovaries are quiet. We agree at this point whether the cycle will be natural or lightly stimulated.

Days 8 to 12

Follicle tracking

One or two short scans watch the leading follicle grow. We are looking for a single mature follicle, not several.

Around day 12

Trigger injection

When the follicle is ready, one injection sets ovulation about 36 hours later. Your insemination is booked from that moment.

Day 14 (approx.)

Insemination

The sample is produced and prepared, then inseminated. You rest briefly and return to your day. Your pregnancy test is 14 days later.

Most people describe it as similar to a cervical smear, a little pressure and brief cramping, over in a few minutes. No sedation is needed and you can drive yourself home.
