How long should you try to conceive before seeing a fertility specialist? Learn when to seek fertility evaluation, when age matters, warning signs, and what happens next.
Trying to conceive can start out feeling simple: have regular sex, wait, and hopefully see those two lines.
But when month after month passes without a positive pregnancy test, the question changes from “When will it happen?” to “Should we get checked?”
For most women under 35 with regular, unprotected intercourse and no known fertility problems, a fertility evaluation is generally recommended after 12 months of trying without achieving pregnancy. For women aged 35 or older, evaluation is generally recommended after 6 months. Women over 40, or anyone with a known or suspected fertility problem, may benefit from seeking help sooner.
That doesn’t mean you have to wait until you reach those timeframes before asking questions. In some situations, waiting may not make sense.
